When the pandemic struck, we understood that we had to build a lifeline for our clients. The lockdowns closed universities and workplaces, making it impossible for our clients to earn Skills Development points. As supply chain disruptions limited their options for suppliers, their ability to achieve Preferential Procurement points was disrupted. Many of their initiatives aimed at supporting enterprises and the community were forced to a standstill.
Despite the dark and difficult conditions, there was no relaxation in B-BBEE compliance targets. This rigidity resulted in many of our clients missing their BEE targets and facing penalties for breaching covenants in their supply agreements. (We released a vlog at the time stating that, in a time of Covid, B-BBEE could reasonably be understood as an economic co-morbidity.)
Our story is one of resilience and adaptability, of a small business making a significant impact during a time of crisis. We found innovative ways to support larger businesses that were constrained by the State of Disaster. We helped them navigate through the complexities of B-BBEE compliance, ensuring they could still fulfill many of their commitments.
Our approach was to design a product that would make compliance as cost-effective and easy as it could be. We charged (and charge) no fee on top of the statutory minimum cost. Our solution adds a certain 2% to 3.5% of NPAT a year over five years (depending on Sector).
To remedy the problem of getting evidence from previous beneficiaries during lockdown, we designed our processes to deliver documentation that was perfect and always on time.
Lastly, because many of our clients were concentrating on staying in business rather than on B-BBEE compliance, we designed an offering that could be implemented at the last moment.
This approach provided relief and added value during a critical period.
Thankfully, lockdown has passed into history. Our clients’ challenges now include trying to make a profit in a competitive and load shed environment. The regulations seem to change all the time, and the interpretation provided by Verification Agents is inconsistent.
We have modified our offering to cater to these post-Covid concerns. Our formula of saving clients’ money, providing an easy to use, reliable service and adapting to our clients’ time frames and rhythms, seems to work in all environments. The strongest endorsement of our solution’s success is the loyalty of our clients: every client who has engaged with our services has returned every year since.
